Harper alum Bilal Hussain

Ten years ago, in 2006, I started my first day as a student here at Harper. I was a first-generation college student, but I never thought too much of it until after I graduated from Harper.

My parents are Pakistani Muslim immigrants who did not attend college in the United States and could not offer any guidance on how to navigate college or how to choose a career path. I started Harper with few skills on how to be a good student. Read more

Michael Turgeon

Michael Turgeon is an engineer, entrepreneur, financial planner and proud Harper graduate. Although Michael’s high school friends jokingly referred to Harper as the “University of Southern Palatine,” Michael is very proud of his choice to attend Harper. Back in 1979, when Michael started at Harper, the campus had only seven buildings (we now total 22 buildings and two satellite campuses). Seeing the campus grow and the contributions Harper generates to our local economy makes him proud to be an alumnus. Read more

Ryan Eberhardt

A 2016 graduate, Harper alum Ryan Eberhardt just made his way to Palo Alto, California to begin his junior year at Stanford University, where he plans to major in computer science and then pursue a master’s degree. Though he was in the Engineering Pathways program at Harper and guaranteed transfer to the University of Illinois, Ryan ultimately felt Stanford’s student body and Silicon Valley location would lead to more opportunities in the field of software engineering. Donna Grzegorek

Donna Grzegorek earned her degree in dental hygiene from Harper College in 1980. Though she had initially planned to attend a 4-year university, Donna decided to attend Harper after learning that Harper graduates achieved higher scores on the national board exams than graduates of other programs. Harper College Distinguished Alumnus Larry Moats has never forgotten a five minute conversation he had with his English professor 50 years ago that he says changed his life and inspired a lifetime of learning. Read more

Lisa Sonora

Meet Lisa Sonora. Lisa is an American artist and creative business consultant based in Oaxaca City, Mexico. On her website, she tells visitors that she is a high school drop-out…with an MBA. Oh, and by the way, she is an alumna of Harper College. Read more

Shirley L. Turpin 

On May 12, 2015, the Harper College Educational Foundation recognized the Turpin family with the naming of the Turpin Fashion Design Equipment Room in honor of Shirley L. Turpin in Building H. Shirley Turpin was also presented with a Harper College Alumni Achievement Award for Lifelong Learning. Read more

William (Bill) Palmer

William (Bill) Palmer is currently a special services teacher at Barrington High School working with at-risk students. Ironically, this is the same high school he dropped out of in 1969.  For the past 24 years, his objective has been to prevent young people from making the same mistakes he once made, such as working below their academic ability and dropping out of school.
